Helping to focus your responses. At a recent BECTU ‘Getting In Getting On’ workshop for creative freelancers, we covered the importance of STAR in interviews. Many people at interviews find answering questions really difficult. Often they can give too much information and the really important information is lost in waffle. Using STAR to answer questions is one great option. STAR has been around for a while but is a solid and useful structure to your replies. “When asked a question, STAR helps give clear and factual responses. The employer wants to make a decision about you and the more specific information and competencies you signpost, the stronger your impression.” said Alec McPhedran of Skills TV at a recent recruitment skills workshop. “The S is for @situation’. Describe the specific situation to frame your response to a question on your competency. T is for ‘target’, what is it you decided should be the outcome. A is for the specific ‘actions’ you personally took. This demonstrates your way of working. Finally, the R is for ‘results’. As a result of your actions, what were the results? Ask for the Job Description and / or the competencies and practice answering questions against the competencies using STAR.” If you’ve been invited to an interview, your CV has impressed. In theory, you can only now talk yourself out of a job. STAR gives you that edge.
