If you need a copy of the Train the Trainer workshop outline, click here.
In preparation for the workshop, it would be great if you could work your way through the following topics in advance of the session. This helps in having a common starting point on the day as well as allowing us more time to discuss how we can deal with group specific ideas, thoughts and individual learning needs.. It should take you around 60 minutes to work through the pre-workshop activities.
If you do would like to chat over the event or any of the following elements before the day, please contact Alec McPhedran, your workshop facilitator. He can be contacted on 0121 366 87 99 or at info@skillschannel.tv.
Have fun and we look forward to seeing you at the event.

Things to do that will help you prepare for the GBCT Train the Trainer workshop
1. Learning Styles Questionnaire
We are all unique as individuals. We all have a preferred and individual way of learning. Based on the work of Honey and Mumford, Kolb and others, we can get a sense of our potential learning preferences. As a learner, this helps us identify the most appropriate learning best suited to us. As a trainer, it helps you think about making sure you cover all learning styles when you deliver a training session or coach others. On that basis, most people tend to complete a learning styles questionnaire. In preparation for the workshop, it is essential you complete this before the session as we will be using the theory during the day. |
2. Learning Styles Explained
Having completed your learning stytles questionnaire, this short video gives a high level overivew of the application of the theory for both learners and those who train or coach others. |
3. Learning Objectives
To give you fopcus on any learning event you deliver, it's really important that you plan and work around your session or programme learning objectives. These make it clear what you will be covering and what a trainee or learner will be able to do as a result of any learning. Thjs is also important when we look to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of a learning intervention. If we have no learning objectives, we have nothing to measure. This document gives you a brief overview of idaes to help craft your learning obectives. |
4. Evaluation, Evaluation, Evaluation
As a trainer, it's incredibly important that we evaluate during and after any learning initiative. Most training professionals tend to use the approach developed by Donald Kirkpatrick. We will be discussing evaluation on the workshop so please do read through the attached document on Evaluation. Essentially, you need to think about how will you know when your learners can know a subject and be able to confidently apply the skills? |
5. Understanding Coaching in Learning
More and more, in learning situations, we talk about facilitated learning rather than training. Facilitated learning means working and involving an individual or a group of people in the learning experience. As such, we tend to use the principles of coaching. As a professional in the screen industry you will often coach an individual and it is a key skill identified as being an asset in taking on industry professionals. This short video introduces you to the essential elements of coaching. These tend to be used on a one to one coaching session or, as said, can be used in facilitated learning. |

The following are some tools or resources you might find useful to look at or try out.
Behind Behaviour
As a trainer and a coach, part of our role is to change the behaviour of others. This is possibly the biggest challenge we face as changing behaviour is definately not easy. This video explains why people behave as they do and for us as facilitators of learning, understanding what drives behaviour and how this can help us in our approach to helping learners and their change challenges.. |
Planning a Training Session
Thbis is a great item from Mind Tools in helping yopu to plan, prepare, de;liver and evaluate a group training session. Rewally informative. |
VARK Learning Styles
One approach trainers use is visual, auditory, kinesthetic and reading and writing learning. This is based on mixing learning experiences with all of the main senses of what people see, hear, feel or read. Again, like Honey and Mumford Learning Styles, people have learning preferences so mixing language and experiences makes the learning more applicable. This video summarises this approach. |
Building a Learning or Lesson Plan
This is a useful video giving more detail in tools and techniques to build your lesson plan. It contains the key elemetns necessary for effective lessons plans. As a trainer, you will soon realise the amount of time you need to prepare for a session. One theory suggets a ration of 6 hours prep for each hour delivered. The fvalue of a good lesson plan is that if it well constructed and proves effective, you can use it again in the future and update as and when required. |
Business Balls
This site is an amazing resource frequently referenced by trainers for learning ideas, hints and tips. BusinessBalls is a free ethical learning and development resource for people and organizations. The site was founded by Alan Chapman in 1999, and redeveloped by Accipio in 2017, as part of a new partnership.
