VALUE AND RESPECT DIFFERENCE

Dealing with Workplace Bullying and Harassment in the Creative Industries

Picture
The BFI/BAFTA anti bullying and harassment principles and zero-tolerance guidance have been developed with organisations across the film, television and games industries.
The Set of Principles and Guidance to tackle bullying and harassment, specifically tailored to the screen industries was published in response to the urgent and systemic issues revealed over past months. Galvanised by a determination to eradicate bullying and harassment and support victims more effectively, the guidance was developed by the BFI in partnership with BAFTA and in consultation with organisations including guilds, unions, industry member bodies and key agencies as well as employees and freelancers across all roles.

The BFI/BAFTA guidelines are incredibly valuable in offering all business owners, producers, line managers, directors and team leaders a pragmatic set of details in which they should be leading by example. To download a copy of the guidelines, click on the button below.

Workshop aim
The aim of the workshop is to establish and develop  key behaviours to build on and action that promote and implement anti bullying and harassment practicein the workplace
Example content of the day
Welcome
An introduction to the aim, objectives and format of the day. Participants go straight into an activity in which they reflect on their core quality and how this is of maximum benefit yet could be seen as a negative by others.

An overview of the BFI & BAFTA guidelines
The purpose of the session is to give a high level introduction to the antibullying and harassment guidelines, the responsibility of the director and consequences of not following the guidelines.

A step back to look at why we are who we are
This session helps people to understand the importance of behaviour, why we behave as we do and how we can change and manage our behaviour. We also explore how our behaviour influences others and the way in which we can develop better relationships by understanding and valuing difference. This will be based on the outcome of the pre-workshop individual Social Styles questionnaire.

Dealing with people challenges
A production can take place over a weekend or for a few years. None the less the pressures are immense. Here we explore typical pressures and identify ways in which improved communication, direction and delegation could be achieved but with the aim of reducing the perception or possible claim of bullying or harassment.

Moving forward
A short session on peer to peer coaching to help identify at least two specific actions for changing or building on behaviour. The aim is to agree those actions that will genuinely take place and set a follow up telephone conversation with their peer to discuss any changes, challenges and successes.

Workshop summary
A reflection on the Workshop, summarising the key themes, ways forward followed by a session evaluation.

Emma Watson discusses the BFI guidelines
Following the launch of the BFI/BAFTA anti bullying and harassment guidelines, actress Emma Watson, discusses the rationale for the policy.
“Led by the BFI and BAFTA, the industry has come together to agree these Principles and Guidance – developed by people who understand the subtleties of the hierarchy on a film set and what it’s like to work strange, unsociable hours. I hope these Principles become second nature for everyone; they are not just about protecting individuals but are also an important step in embracing a greater diversity of voices – and eventually having an entertainment industry that actually represents the world we live in.”
Emma Watson, Actor and activist
