Course Content
- Training, coaching and mentoring: An exploration of the key differences and use of when to use training, coaching and mentoring to develop others.
- Essential coaching and mentoring skills: We work on a range of coaching and mentoring skills including questioning, listening, feedback and summarising. High impact activities make this a fun and pragmatic session.
- Managing the discussion: Here we test out two coaching and mentoring session structure models - GROW and GENIUS.
- Practice one: Working with course colleagues, you will carry out a real coaching session and receive constructive feedback on your approach and style.
- Contracting: Building and developing positive coaching and mentoring relationships is essential. This session gives hints and tips for managing that relationship.
- Practice two: A final coaching session on how you will continue to develop your coaching skills following the workshop. You will also coach a course colleague on the same topic. Some people agree to meet up after the event to continue with developing their skills and experience.

Alec McPhedran is the founder and managing director of Skills Channel TV. He has been a learning and development specialist for over twenty five years. Alec's aim is to help people achieve.
Alec is an experienced coach and mentor and works with an incredibly diverse range of clients including hotel managers, chief executives, professional sports people, entrepreneurs, media talent and managers developing their careers.
Before establishing Skills Channel TV in 2006, Alec held senior management roles with Channel Four, Railtrack, Financial Times Management and Henly Distance Learning.
With this wealth of experience Alec often designs in-house coaching and mentoring programmes and works on accredited coaching and mentoring qualification based events. Alec is also the originator of the GENIUS coaching model.
